Description
The oxidase test is a key test to distinguish between the Pseudomonadaceae (Ox +) and Enterobacteriaceae (Ox -) families, and is useful for speciation and identification of many other bacteria, those that must use oxygen as the final acceptor of electrons in aerobic respiration. The end product of this metabolism is water or hydrogen peroxide.
The oxidase test is indicated by numerous official methods (ISO-APAT-ISTISAN) as a confirmation test for bacterial identification.
