Description

SELENITE BROTH is an enrichment medium, its formula corresponds to that conceived by Leifson, for the selective isolation of Salmonella spp. from stools or other pathological materials (feces and urine).

The selectivity of this medium is due to the fact that Escherichia coli and other gram-negative microorganisms that constitute normal faecal flora are maintained in a prolonged latency stage, while Salmonella and Shigella species are inhibited to a lesser extent and enter the logarithmic phase of growth before Escherichia coli.
