Description

Dextrose Agar is a medium utilised for the cultivation of a great variety of micro-organisms. Dextrose Agar can be used as a base for the preparation of Blood Agar or with the addition of blood, that favours the growth of demanding micro-organisms such as Streptococci, Pneumococci e Meningococci. It is not possible to determine the haemolytic activity of the micro-organisms because of the high content of glucose.

D-glucose present in the medium allows a greater rapidity growth of the difficult growing micro-organisms. Dextroes Agar is recommended by APHA for the examination and count of the microbic flora in salty vegetable foodstuffs or in pickled foodstuffs. Dextrose Broth with the Durham Bell reveals the fermentation of carbohydrates with production of gas.
