Description

RHAMNOSE MAC-CONKEY AGAR is a moderately selective and differential medium for the isolation of Escherichia coli (STEC), serotype O26, producers of Shiga toxin belonging to the sub-group of non-O157 (Rhamnose non–fermentative).

Escherichia coli (STEC) O26, also called verocyto-toxic (VTEC) is a aetiological agent in a strong increase of the diarrhoea. From 1982 to 1990, the isolation in cases of bloody diarrhoea were attributable to the 90% at Escherichia coli (STEC) O157, in recent years there has been a large increase of strains STEC non-O157, which includes serotypes: O26, O103, O111, O121, O45, O145. Among all the serotypes, the highest incidence is due to the strain STEC O26 (35%).
