Description

EOSINE METHYLENE BLUE AGAR (LEVINE), based on Levine's formulation, is indicated by O.M. 11 ottobre 1978 for the confirmation test in the search for coliforms, in short-preserved milk (pasteurized) and/or milk powder for early childhood feeding. The medium is always indicated by the O.M. 11 ottobre 1978 for the confirmation test in the search for coliforms in egg products, such as pasteurized powdered eggs and/or crystallized pasteurized egg white.

The medium allows to differentiate E.coli from Enterobacter aerogenes by the presence of the phosphate buffer which minimizes the acidifying effects of the lactose fermentation of the Enterobacter aerogenes. Eosin present in the medium inhibits the development of gram positive microorganisms.
