Description

Clostridium botulinum medium supplemented, known as the TGY, is formulated according to Dezfulian et al. It is a selective medium for the isolation, diagnosis and determination of Clostridium botulinum in foods and/or sediments as indicated by the AOAC 997.26 method.

Clostridium botulinum is a gram-positive bacteria, spore-forming, with a Clostridium sporagio deforming the seed 4-6 μm long, from the family of clostridiaceae, which also includes Clostridium perfrigens and Clostridium tetani. It is a very mobile bacterium and the toxin secreting causes severe food poisoning, botulism. The seed and spores are also found in the soil and in plants; while humans are usually intoxicated by ingesting contaminated food and not well cooked or canned food where the bacterium has developed. Useful indicators of food contaminated with botulism are the smell of putrid, rancid butter and food disintegration with the formation of gus bubbles; althought, some types of contamination can not show any organoleptic modification of food.
