Description
Gardnerella Vaginalis Agar is a partially selective differential medium for the isolation of Gardnerella vaginalis from clinical specimens. The presence of blood favors the growth of the species and allows the occurance of hemolysis around the colonies.
The medium formulation provides the nutrients that stimulate the growth of Gardnerella, and antibiotics such as gentamicin and nalidixic acid inhibit gram negative. Amphotericin B limits the growth of yeasts (Candida), that are often present in vaginal specimens. The blood is added as a nutrient and detect the diffuse beta-hemolysis characteristic of the bacillus.
