Columbia broth base is a highly nutritious medium that can be used for the cultivation of non-demanding microorganisms or can be made selective by the addition of various substances.

The medium can be enriched and selective for the cultivation of certain species by the addition of 5% defibrinated blood sheep (cod. 17.0141).
