CLED AGAR

Description

C.L.E.D. (Cystine-lactose-Electrolyte-Deficient) medium allows the growth of most bacteria that cause urinary infections and permits the differentiation between colonies. The bromotymol blue is a pH indicator that allows to evidentiate the fermentation of lactose by microorganisms and its changing to yellow indicates this fermentation.

Among the most common bacteria for urinary infections there are E. coli, other coliform microorganisms such as Klebsiella spp., Pseudomonas spp., Proteus and Staphylococci and Streptococci. Since the medium does not have electrolytes it can stop the diffusion of Proteus.

The seeding of the sample can be done through dilution and/or directly on the agar's surface. Count the colonies after incubating the dishes at 35 degrees celsius for 18-24 hours. Report the number of colonies per ml of urine, remembering that if the growth is 100.000/ml there is a urinary infection.
