Description

MAC CONKEY SORBITOL AGAR + βCIG is a specific differential selective medium for the isolation of Enterobacteriaceae and gram negative bacteria related to clinical specimens, such as feces and urine. The pepton mix favors the growth of Escherichia coli O157:H7, while bile salts and crystal violet inhibit the growth of possibly associated contaminating microorganisms. In this medium there is a single carbohydrate, the sorbitol, that identifies Escherichia coli O157 from other serotypes within the same species. In addition, the medium contains 5-Bromo-4-Chloro-3-Indolyl-β-D-Glucuronide, a substrate for the glucuronidase enzyme which is generally not present in Escherichia coli O157 strains.

The medium might be made selective by adding to the basic medium the complete supplement Cefixime Tellurite Supplement (cod. 76.028).
