Description
Kanamycin Esculin Azide Agar is a selective medium for the isolation of group D Streptococci in food.
Group D Streptococci differ from other Streptococci for their ability to hydrolyze esculin to glucose and aglycon esculetine. Esculetine reacts with an iron salt, forming a dark brown or black complex that produces a diffused blackening in the medium, containing ferric citrate as a source of FE3+ ions. The presence of kanamycin and sodium azide inhibits the growth of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
