Description
Horse lysed blood is a rich nutritional supplement suitable for the growth of delicate germs, such as: Corynebacterium diphteriae, Clostridium, Haemophilus e Campylobacter. The red blood cell lysis is released by the thymidine phosphorylase enzyme that cleaves the thymidine present in many media. Thymidine acts as antagonist in sensitivity tests with antibiotics, trimethoprim and sulfonamides; therefore the addition of horse lysed blood is also indicated in the preparation of blood media for antibiograms. Emina (factor X) is also released, which is an important growth factor for Haemophilus.
