B.H.I. Agar is a highly recommended nutrient medium for the cultivation of a great variety of demanding pathogenous micro-organisms such as Streptococci, Pneumococci e Meningococci. B.H.I Broth is particularly indicated for Haemoculture.
The addition of 10% of defibrinated blood to the B.H.I. Agar medium permits the isolation and the cultivation of Hystoplasma capsulatume; furthermore, the addition of antibiotics such as Penicillin (20 U/ml) and Streptomycin (40 mg/ml), determine a greater selectivity of the medium for pathogenous fungi, being inhibited the growth of saprophyte bacteria and fungi.
The presence of glucose in the concentration of 0.2% on the petri dishes of B.H.I. Agar containing the defibrinated blood does not subtract from the haemolytic activity by the micro-organisms.
